I saw a concert version of "Warsaw" this afternoon at Temple Emanuel in Great Neck, Long Island.
Even without sets and with the orchestra in a tight corner the production I saw was incredibly moving. I was impressed with Roman's change in which he did not give up his idealism as much as he deepened his commitments and accepted his status as a prisoner and his willingness to become a black marketeer and then a resistance fighter, even to the point of realizing that the only choice of alternatives left to him and his friends was to die as victims of hatred or as rebels against tyranny.

My father, now deceased, and his family were imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto. I'm not sure if my father took part in the uprising. He died when I was a teenager so I never had the chance to ask him much about his experiences and he didn't talk about it. I do know that his parents and sister died in the ghetto and that he was the only survivor. This musical is a must see for me.
